10 Quick Traffic Building Tips For Any Web Site By Terry Dean 

The question most often asked on the Internet is, "How do I get more traffic to my site?"

You would think that an answer for this question would be extremely simple, but it really isn't. It isn't that it is so hard to get traffic to web sites. The problem is that there are so many different avenues of traffic generation you can choose from for any site.

In this short report, we are going to cover 10 different low or no cost ways you can get traffic to any web site. This isn't even an extensive list. I could easily name off 5 - 10 more ways you could be getting traffic to your site, but I don't want to overwhelm you with too many options.

The reason that most people don't get traffic is that they "Try" something, and then they give up. The key to any marketing is testing and then improving. If a method doesn't work for you on your first try, second try, or even your twelfth try, it doesn't matter. Keep going anyway. 

Read everything you can about that subject and keep trying different things. If you have chosen to use classified ads for your products and services, try different ezines. Use AOL classifieds. Try Yahoo's classifieds. Create new headlines for your ads. Create new sales letters to follow-up.

Classified ads can work if you figure out how to work them for your product or service.

The same aspects are true of many different types of Internet advertising. They work, but only if you are willing to keep on going even if you fail a dozen times trying. You keep learning and you keep testing.

So, without further ado, here are your ten killer Internet Traffic Building Techniques:

1. Search Engine Submissions

Almost everyone starts right here. They know that search engines bring 84% of the traffic to most web sites, so they know they have to submit to them.

To achieve the top rankings in the search engines will take some serious work. You have millions of competitors, but you have an advantage. You are willing to learn and do what it takes to get to the top.

To achieve the top traffic building positions, you will need to study everything you can on search engine positioning and meta tags. Then, you will have to test. Use a tool such as Web Position to check your rankings, examine your competitors who are beating you, and then edit your pages. 

If you are willing to keep going through this process and learning each step along the rise of your rankings, you too could soon be generating 100s of hits daily from top search engine positions.

2. Classifieds in Ezines

The biggest bang for your marketing buck will come from ezine advertising. For $10 - $50 per classified ad, you can reach thousands of potential customers in your targeted market.

With thousands of different ezines available, you can expand into hundreds of them once you find a classified ad and follow-up system that works for your product or service. 

By testing your little classified ads and expanding into more and more ezines every week, you could quickly start reaching millions of people weekly and earning an income to match.

3. AOL Classifieds

AOL currently has over 15 million members. If I could only place one classified ad for any web site or product, it would probably be here. For $12.50, you can have your ad placed in view of people on a service where the ads are actually read.

I know several people earn a couple of hundred dollars weekly by placing little classified ads just using AOL's system. The key on AOL is to create a killer headline for your ad so it stands out above the hundreds of other ads in every category.

4. Yahoo Classifieds

There are very few free classified ad sites that actually work. Yahoo is one of the shining lights that stands out above the crowd of mediocre free ad sites. Yahoo has more traffic than any other Internet site and it definitely shows when you place your ads here.

On Yahoo, you are allowed to place 10 ads at a time, so do so. A little key to creating effective ads here is to delete your ads every few days and replace them. Then, you will be able to keep your ads towards the top of the list and receive more free readers.

5. Trade Links

If you develop a strong content oriented site you can persuade thousands of other webmasters to link to you or to trade links with you. There are even a few consultants online who have developed linking campaigns and have achieved a million hits a month or more for their customers within 90 days by linking with the right sites.

You can do this yourself. The key is to develop content people want to link to and then get out there and make the contacts by visiting people's sites, sending out personalized emails to webmasters you have visited, and networking in discussion groups.

6. Participate in Leveraged Banner Exchanges

Regular banner exchanges don't work that well. Although they can produce a few extra hits a month for your site, they never seem to give you the kind of traffic building leverage you need to grow to hundreds of thousands of hits a month.

A new wave of banner exchanges is growing though at unprecedented rates. What they do that separates them apart is that they will give you a 5% to 20% credit of banner impressions of anyone's site that you refer. If you refer a site which gets a million hits a month, you would get 200,000 free impressions a month extra. 

7. Start Your Own Mailing List

If you want to make money online, start your own mailing list. It is the best way to keep contact with your prospects and your customers. It is also the best way to build the credibility you need to make sales to your targeted market.

A little less talked about advantage to having your own mailing list is that you can use it to trade ads with other ezines out there. If you trade ads with 10 other ezines out there, you could easily be saving yourself $100 - $500 in advertising expense every week!

8. Banner Ads on Individual Sites

When people think of banner ads they almost always think of the major search engines or major sites online. Well, I have been advertising lately with banners, and I can tell you something.

Making money using banner ads on these high traffic high cost sites is extremely difficult and risky.

These sites will charge you $20 per 1,000 impressions to general audiences and $50 per 1,000 impressions to targeted markets. 

By seeking out individual sites who get high traffic (50,000 hits to 1,000,000 hits a month), you can actually get rates of $1 - $10 per 1,000 impressions of your banner ads. By finding 10 - 20 of these sites, you can quickly build yourself an overwhelming river of traffic to your site for a much lower cost than the major search engines.

9. Advertise on Goto.com

Goto has come up with a great advertising plan for businesses. You can actually go to http://www.goto.com and bid on traffic for your site. You pick keywords for your site and then place a bid of whatever price you are willing to pay for traffic from that keyword...generally you would bid .01 to .10 per keyword.

Then, Goto will only charge you for the actual hits you receive from them. If you bid one penny for the keyword and you receive 10 hits from it today, you only owe 10 cents for the day. This low cost traffic building method cannot be beat anywhere.

The key to making it work for you is to come up with hundreds of possible keywords for your site and then bid low amounts such as a few cents on each. Then, check your stats continually and find out what kind of traffic you are getting.

10. Free Stuff

The KING of traffic is free stuff. If you want to get real traffic to your site, provide the kind of free content and services that your market is hunting desperately for. 

Provide free articles to other web sites. Provide free downloads. Give away free CGI programs. Provide hundreds of links to needed tools. Provide links to downloadable software. Give your visitors what they want and they will keep coming back and referring their friends.

7 Little or NO Money Strategies For Building Traffic To Your Web Site

Every web site has ONE thing in common: to be successful, they must have traffic. No Traffic will equal NO sales no matter how well done your site is or how high your closing rate is. So, every web site out there is looking for ways of producing more traffic at a lower cost.

Today, we are going to be examining some of the best of those ways and show you how you can put them to use in your site no matter what your products or services are...These are not a complete list of traffic tools, but they can get you started in the right direction.

1) Search Engines

I don't put as much value on the search engines as I used to, but they are still an awesome way to build traffic to your site without having to spend your hard earned dollars.

It has quickly erupted into a major battle between webmasters and search engines to try to figure out how to get that coveted Top 20 position in the rankings under searched for keywords. If you come up on top, you get hundreds of hits from each keyword monthly. If you come up in the 1,000 position, you get zilch.

The difficulty in achieving the top positions is the fact that many of the search engines change their ranking formats almost monthly to stay ahead of the pack. It becomes almost a full time job just to figure out which techniques work on which engines.

2) Newsgroup, Forum, and Mailing List Participation

The second tactic I recommend EVERY internet marketer use is to participate in targeted forums and newsgoups on their subject. If you are not currently participating, why not? It's Free!

You start visiting the forum regularly and then once you know your way around it, you should start answering questions for people and becoming an all around helpful individual. Give and it will be given back to you.

You will be able to build up relationships in these forums and build up your traffic at the same time without every having to spend a penny...

3) Trading Links with Other Sites

Another ZERO cost marketing technique is to trade links with other web sites. Now, I know from experience this can be a daunting task at first...you trade 10 links and only get an ounce of traffic from it...but what happens when you start having hundreds or thousands of sites linked to you?

Where do you start? Start off by getting out there and offering...offer to trade links with people who are in the same forums, newsgroups, and mailing lists as you. Go to some of the online databases that have links. Participate in banner exchanges and link exchanges. Nothing will happen unless you take the initiative and do something today...

4) Writing Articles for Ezines and Magazines

There are thousands of ezines and magazines out there just waiting for your articles. What is your area of expertise...write on it OR if you don't want to do the writing, collect the information together in some kind of organized manner and have a local writer (Check the newspaper reporters) do your article for you.

Once you have your highly informative article ready to go, contact publishers of ezines and magazines and submit your piece. Think about the publicity you can get through this...it can bring thousands of people to your site with almost no cost at all.

5) Use CGI Traffic Plug-Ins On Your Site

There are many CGI programs out there which can help become traffic generators by having your visitors return over and over again. Tools such as classified ad sites, free-for-all link pages, message boards, chat rooms, postcard sites, and more can all contribute to your overall traffic building plan.

Many webmasters are now achieving large amounts of traffic at their web site by organizing co-op ads. For example, you could purchase a postcard in a card deck which goes out to 100,000 people for between $1495 - $2000. Then, you would sell 10 or so ads on it for $149 or $199 and make back the money that you paid out for the ad. Then, your web site ad gets to ride along for FREE.

7) Press Releases

This is a technique that is only now coming of age online. How many times have you heard all of the other techniques I gave to you above only to have this one left out of the entire web marketing picture.

Don't just think it takes knowing the right people to get your press releases out there...it doesn't. If you can give the media stories which are interesting and revealing, they will be glad to publish it...Do you have a new exciting product? Do you have an event going on at your site that's newsworthy? Come up with one and then contact the media...

Considering Banner Advertising? ... Better Think Again.

If you're determined to succeed in your home business, you've probably tried, (or WILL try), just about every form of legal advertising out there. And, maybe even some that aren't so legal. But, before you waste valuable time and hundreds of dollars, let me let you in on a little secret.

If you're thinking of banner advertising, forget it.

Sure, banner advertising CAN be effective. But most of the time, it's just NOT. Banner exchanges don't work unless you're already getting hundreds of visitors to your website daily. And, even then, why would you run the risk of losing those hard-earned visitors to someone else's site? My advice to you Save that banner advertising space for your OWN banners -- banners that are going to make YOU money.

Increasing your profits with banners placed strategically throughout your website makes more sense. If you have a banner for an affiliate program on home employment, put that banner at the top of one of your home employment web pages. But, make sure to use the target=_blank attribute in your A HREF hyperlink tag to be sure that visitors won't be leaving your site.

What's that you say? You signed up for an employment-related affiliate program ... but you don't have a relevant page on your website? Well, I'll tell you right now, you won't be making very much money from that program. It's self-defeating to sign up with affiliate programs that don't have anything to do with your main website.

Not only does this make your site look disorganized and pointless, you're not going to be making any money from the program if you have visitors to your website that are looking for tomatoes, and you have banners and links to phone books. Get the picture?

So, if banner advertising doesn't work, then just what SHOULD you do? That's easy. Advertising in ezines is one of the most cost-effective solutions available. And, here's why:
 

1. It's easy to get the reader's attention.

If you have an effective headline, that is. Banners are easily ignored, whereas ezine ads are noticed more if you're advertising in a quality ezine. 2. Ezine ads are less likely to be intentionally ignored.

Like I said above, banners are ignored because website visitors KNOW that they're there for advertising. If you pick a quality ezine, your ad might be initially "mistaken" for regular content, thus increasing your response rate.
 

3. You reach a pre-qualified audience.

If you're advertising in the right type of ezine, its main topic should be relevant to what you're promoting. To make a long story short, don't get caught advertising those phone books in a gardening-related ezine. Your ad campaign has more "flop" potential when you don't properly target your audience. 4. It's inexpensive.

Banner advertising can be expensive on higher-traffic websites, and results can still be very poor. With ezine advertising on the other hand, it's easier to earn back the cost of the ad with the revenue generated from running the ad! And, poor results can be virtually eliminated by testing your ad before you pay to run it.
 

5. Quick turn-around for profit

Banner advertising can still have this advantage as well. You normally don't have to wait more than four weeks for your ad to be run in your ezine of choice. And, most times, it will run immediately -- in the very next issue.
 

6. Ezine ads can go into greater detail on your offer.

Banners only allow you a sentence, if that much, to get website visitors to click. Ezine ads can often be as long as you need for them to. However, the purpose of your ad should always be to get your reader to request more information, visit your website, or subscribe to your ezine. It should NOT be used to get the reader to buy on the spot. Keep it short and sweet -- just long enough to spark the reader's interest.

With all of those reasons, it should be easy to see why ezine advertising is more effective than banner ads. It's cheaper, you reach a more qualified audience, and it's more likely to get noticed. In only one day, I had over 400 new visitors clamoring their way into my website. I didn't use spam, it wasn't through ezine advertising, and it didn't cost me anything -- not one thin dime.

So how did I do it? What was the FREE, "secret" technique that I used to start a virtual avalanche of unique visitors to my new website? I'll tell you...

I got HomeBasedHeaven.com a NUMBER ONE listing on Yahoo!, the most popular and well-trafficked searchable directory online. My traffic literally exploded by 400+ new visitors less than 24 hours after my new site's listing first appeared.


Here are a few tips for getting YOUR site listed on Yahoo:

1. OPTIMIZE YOUR WEBSITE FOR THE DIRECTORY.

You know the routine. No dead links, no "under construction" signs, no poorly-designed websites, etc. They're all pretty much common sense details, but they're IMPORTANT details that you definitely need to pay attention to. Yahoo! isn't going to list sites that look like they've been designed by third-graders, so your site needs to be in tip-top shape.
 

2. CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE CATEGORY.

Again, common sense. Choose the most specific category furthest from the top level category to make Yahoo! reviewers happy. The more work you make for them, the less likely it is that they'll approve your site submission.

And, despite what most online marketers are saying about listing your category in the same one as your competitors, that's NOT the best way to go. Why? Just because a competing site is listed in a category doesn't mean YOUR site should be. Start from the topmost category relevant to your site (i.e. Business and Economy), and work your way down.
 

3. CHOOSE *ANOTHER* CATEGORY

If Yahoo! gives you a chance to suggest your site in more than one category, you'd bloody well better take advantage! Do you know how much traffic one listing in Yahoo! can give you? Yes? Then you know how important it is to MAXIMIZE on that traffic. Choose another highly-relevant category and suggest that one too, when their submission form asks for it. Getting listed in two categories can mean several hundred more visitors for you!
 

4. SUBMIT YOUR SITE TO YAHOO.

They say they give you 25 words for your site's description, but if you submit that many, your description is DEFINITELY getting chopped down. You don't want to risk important keywords being dropped from your listing, so 12-15 words is the absolute MAXIMUM you should submit in your description. Anything more than that, and you should trash your description, and write a better one.

If YOU don't, THEY will.
 

5. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. NOW, WE WAIT.

Now that you've gone through the blood pressure raising process of meticulously submitting your site to Yahoo!, here comes the hard part. Waiting. You'll know when (or if) your site gets accepted into the directory, because you'll get an e-mail letting you know the category you were accepted into.

If you get listed, your site will be at the top of its category in the "what's new" section for the first 2-3 days. It won't be added into the searchable database until a few days after it has been accepted. But, if worse comes to worst...
 

6. IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AGAIN.

Very few sites make it in on their first try, and that's not an accident. Few sites make it on their first try because they simply haven't followed the instructions well, their site was never looked at (probably because of a poorly worded listing), or their site wasn't of the high quality that Yahoo! expects.

In any case, be persistent, and submit your site again. You can resubmit every 2-3 weeks (to the same category) without being penalized for spamming, according to Yahoo! editors themselves. So, make the most of that opportunity, and keep submitting your site until you get in.

NOTE: If you haven't gotten listed by the 3rd or 4th time you submit your site, there's obviously something wrong with it. Improve it before you bombard Yahoo! with resubmissions, and you'll greatly improve your chances of getting listed.

However, if you KNOW you have a top-notch site and you still haven't gotten it listed yet, try sending an e-mail to url-support@yahoo-inc.com. Include the date you last submitted, the category you submitted to, and your site title and URL. If you haven't heard back from them after 7-10 days, optimize your site and start submitting again!


7. REMEMBER ... PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE! DON'T GIVE UP.

My website was accepted into Yahoo! after the second submission, and e-mailing URL support. It was listed #1 for three search terms, and on the first page of search results for a few others. Do a search for "home-based jobs" on Yahoo!, and my first site, (Home-Based Heaven) will come up #1.

Within 24 hours, I had over 400 unique visitors to my website from a number one listing in the directory. Sure, a listing on Yahoo! is good, but a number one listing is better! Good luck.
